Environmental Activism in Australia Series - ClickView and ACF - Director, Producer, Editor

Environmental activism has existed for many decades and various groups and people have led the way on change. Produced in collaboration with the Australian Conservation Foundation and the Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation, I created this series at ClickView to act as essential viewing for students interested in the history of environmentalism in Australia and the future of our planet.

This video series contains three short documentary style videos averaging 6-9mins in length. They involved interviews with the CEO and Campaign Heads at ACF and Traditional Owners of the Mirrar people, as well as combining a mix of rare archival footage, newspaper clippings, and historical event imagery. The videos are titled:

The Rise of The Environmental Movement
The Fight of Jabiluka
Activism Now

Elements of Art Series - Director / Producer / Editor

This series remained in the top 10 most viewed category in the ClickView tertiary library for over three months after its release and was later purchased for broadcast by ABCiView.

Working with an animator and 3D motion graphics artist I was able to bring masterpieces to life and create an informative yet vibrant and engaging series for senior and tertiary level students.

Environmental Activism: The Voices of Youth Activism - Director / Producer / Editor

**Finalist in the Best Youth Education category for the 2022 Helsinki Educational Film Festival International**

For the COP26 summit I took the initiative to create an environmental activism series focusing on the young climate activists across the world. This was created during lockdown, with interviews taking place via zoom and private recordings with some of the leading youth climate activists across the world.

The end result included seven interview edits, as well as a short film detailing the history of environmental activism and the rise of youth activism in recent years.

There were also downloadable resources created to assist with lesson plans for senior level students.

Estée Lauder, Breast Cancer Awareness campaign - Senior Digital Producer

Working as Senior Producer at Click3X, I was responsible for the 2016 Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign film shoot and storyboard execution.

From the New York office, this included organising international crew for a London shoot, sourcing locations, storyboarding, and liasing with Elizabeth Hurley’s agent to arrange her schedule, organising her VO recording and ensuring the budget was carefully maintained.

DreamWorks Animation: The Exhibition - ACMI - Senior Account Manager / Producer

Exhibition Installation.

.....

This exhibition at ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image) provided visitors with a behind-the-scenes look at their favourite animated characters and films, from early development to fully realised animations.

Squint/Opera’s work on this show included two large projection-mapped installations which I produced from concept through to delivery. For one we used original sketches from the film Over The Hedge to recreate a story room portraying key storytelling moments in the film. For the other, we used original material from The Croods to animate a production designer’s desk and bring to life the inner workings of the designer’s mind.

DreamWorks Animation: The Exhibition toured internationally, and features over 400 items including rare and never-before-seen concept drawings, models and original artworks, interviews and interactive displays from DreamWorks much-loved and favourite animated classics.

Nowhere Line: Voices from Manus Island - Animated Short Film - Executive Producer

2015. Animated Short. Directed by Lukas Schrank.

**WINNER - Best Documentary Short - Melbourne International Film Festival **

……

In October 2014, director Lukas Schrank made phone contact with two men, who were able to tell their stories from within the compound. Their interviews offer a chilling insight into the reality of life for the 2200 people currently being held in Australia’s offshore detention centres.

Our detainees speak of their struggle for survival, and attempts to avoid persecution in their home countries by seeking refuge in Australia. But like so many others, their journeys are ill fated.

Their stories are the voice of the film, guiding the animation through the back-streets of Jakarta, across the sea, and deep into the fenced facility of the Manus Island Regional Processing Centre – the regrettable home for the men for the last 16 months.

On February 17, 2014, the Centre erupted in violent conflict between the locals and the detainees. Hundreds of detainees experienced serious injury, and 23 year-old Iranian asylum seeker Reza Berati lost his life. Nowhere Line tells the untold story of that night from inside of the facility’s fences.
By illustrating these journeys and giving air to their stories, this documentary short illuminates the compelling personal side to the human rights crisis faced by those seeking asylum in Australia. It reminds the audience that the search for asylum is but the search for survival.

To assist with the production and distribution of the film a crowd-funding campaign was launched. The campaign has been conceived to benefit those whose stories and journeys are at the heart of the film, and to hopefully make even the smallest difference to the lives of those in detention on Manus Island and Nauru.

Whilst conducting the research and interviews for the film, a simple need became clear. The detainees spoke at length of the struggle of daily life in detention, but also of the anguish and depression caused by inactivity and boredom. To help to make a difference, we are partnering with Good Hood, a community engagement organisation, and Humanitarian Research Partners to spend 25% of the funds raised for the film on sending items such as novels, language books, portable DVD players, toys and textbooks to the detainees. It is our hope that through providing these simple commodities, we will also provide those detained with the comfort of knowing that they are not forgotten.

.....

To unveil a new residential and commercial development in the heart of Melbourne’s business district, Squint/Opera created a suite of materials and multimedia experiences for their on site visitor suite.

This was an 18 month long project where I acted as the Account Manager and Senior Producer for over forty 3D marketing images, three films, an interactive wall projection, VR Google cardboard experience, video installation and interactive model display.

Production Coordinator - TV Series - "Underbelly: Squizzy Taylor Series"

2012. TV Series. Australian Nine Network.

.....

5 Months, 12 locations, 150 crew and an extraordinary amount of coordination later, Underbelly: Squizzy Taylor series occupied the buildings and grounds at the Abbotsford Convent, turning empty spaces into a 1920s gangster wonderland. On behalf of the Abbotsford Convent Foundation, my role was to oversee the ins-and-outs of buidling this fantasy period drama around the busy hive of activity and heritage sentitive spaces that make up this unique arts and cultural precinct.

Major tasks throughout this contract included writing the location agreement, overseeing construction plans, coordinating the site’s events with the production, approving filming schedules, writing updates for the community e-news, visiting tenants and businesses on site regularly, overseeing restoration and repairs, and generally having a high level of communication between key parties from pre to post production.

It was extremely important during the production’s time on site that disruption to the Convent’s environment, community, and usual flow was kept to an absolute minimum. With over 13,000 visitors weekly, numerous tenants and creative organisations, special events, ever changing venue hire bookings, restaurants, cafes and bars and a school on site, the level of communication needed was high to say the least! Acting as the liaison between the production’s Art Director, Construction Manager, Location Managers, Producer, Directors, Abbotsford Convent Staff, tenants, nearby residents and the production’s crew whilst filming, I gathered the needs and concerns of all parties and ensured the subsequent planning that was essential to keeping a harmonious balance between the requirements of the shoot and the values of the Convent.

Since the reopening of the Abbotsford Convent as a community space ten years ago, the Convent has not had a production of this size or duration on site throughout this time. The end result of this project was highly successful for all parties involved, and has reignited the Convent as a future space for large scale filming and creative projects.

Joey Christmas - Feature Animation Teaser - Co-Producer

Working as Head of Production and Strategy at Cowlick Entertainment, I played a key Co-Producer role in the development stage of the Joey Christmas feature length story and animation. Quay Quarter campaign - Squint/Opera and AMP - Senior Account Manager / Producer

2015. Quay Quarter. Squint/Opera.

.....

AMP will transform its landmark site at Circular Quay into a vibrant destination in Sydney.

To capture AMP's vision to transform their Circular Quay site, Quay Quarter as a vibrant precinct close to everything Sydney has to offer – the first film present the precinct as the connection between the Harbour and the CBD, and highlights its proximity to cultural districts, transport hubs, green spaces and the harbour views.

The Loved Ones - Feature Film - Graphic Designer & Art Dept. Assistant

2009. Feature Film. Directed by Sean Byrnes.

**WINNER - People's Choice Award - Toronto International Film Festival**

My major task for The Loved Ones was to design the hero prop for the lead character – the scrapbook of a psychotic girl spanning her life aged 6 to 16. Over 25 pages were hand crafted and replicated so two identical scrapbooks existed. The book was then treated for ageing and used in major scenes throughout the film.

Additional tasks included a teen magazine mock up story, missing posters, a Humpty Dumpty greeting card and assisting with set dressing the lead character’s bedroom.
